Opinel No.07 Carbon Steel Folding Pocket Knife, 3.15 Inch Blade, Beech Wood Handle, Virobloc Lock, Made in France
- Description
The Opinel No.07 Carbon Steel Folding Knife is the French pocket knife in its original form: a 3.15-inch XC90 carbon steel blade, a handle of varnished, PEFC-certified beech wood from eco-managed forests in France's Jura and Vercors regions, and the Virobloc locking ring. Slightly smaller than the No.08 and a bit bigger than the No.06, the No.07 is often called the perfect picnic knife. It slices cheese and fruit with ease, looks right at home on a charcuterie board, and rides comfortably in a pocket.
Why carbon steel? Opinel's XC90 carbon steel is extremely hard, so it takes a very fine edge, wears well and is quick to resharpen on a stone or ceramic rod. The trade-off is upkeep: carbon steel can rust if it is left wet. Dry the blade after each use and wipe on a little cooking oil now and then. Contact with certain foods can make it oxidize quickly, so rinse and dry the blade right after cutting them.
The Virobloc safety ring was patented by Marcel Opinel in 1955. Twist it one way to lock the blade open while you work, and the other way to lock it closed so it cannot open in your pocket.
- Blade: 3.15 in (8 cm), XC90 carbon steel
- Closed length (handle): 3.94 in (10 cm)
- Open length: about 7.0 in
- Weight: about 1.4 oz
- Handle: varnished PEFC-certified beech wood
- Lock: Virobloc safety ring (locks open and closed)
- Packaging: blister pack
- Made in: France
Care: Carbon steel is not stainless. Wipe the blade dry after every use and rub on a little cooking oil from time to time; certain foods can make it oxidize quickly, so rinse and dry it right after cutting them. Hand wash and dry right away. Do not soak the knife or put it in the dishwasher, which can damage a wooden handle.
About Opinel: Opinel has made knives in Savoie, in the French Alps, since Joseph Opinel designed his first folding knife in 1890. Every blade carries the Crowned Hand stamp, and Opinel backs its products with a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
